Okja has more in common with Bong’s recent sci-fi movie Mickey 17 in terms of tone. Even with a story rooted in history, Lee keeps his eye firmly on political issues in modern-day America. Da 5 Bloods interrogates a lot of these issues from conflicting points of view without ever feeling overly preachy or expositional. The outstanding performances are one reason why the story retains so much vitality and resonance throughout its tonal swings.
