LA PLATA, Md. — The fate of the historic Winkler House at 208 Washington Avenue has been decided with the Town of La Plata’s response to the county’s request for a decision on its preservation.

In a letter addressed to county officials, La Plata Mayor Jeannine E. James reaffirmed the town’s commitment to the existing lease agreement with the county, which outlines provisions for the property’s ownership and potential demolition.

“We appreciate the county’s efforts in engaging stakeholders and considering potential options for the property,” James stated. “At this time, it is the town’s position that we will continue to follow the terms of the existing agreement.”

The response follows a Jan. 28 Board of Commissioners meeting where officials discussed whether to preserve or demolish the Winkler House. Initially believed to be necessary for road and stormwater construction, project leaders later determined that the structure could remain intact with renovations.

Community members and stakeholders previously recommended demolishing the house to create a pocket park featuring native trees, plants, and green stormwater infrastructure. The proposed park aligns with ongoing county efforts to expand green spaces and provide a shaded reading area near the upcoming La Plata Library. A commemorative exhibit in the library was suggested to honor the demolished homes.

Former La Plata Councilman Wayne Winkler had expressed interest in preserving the house, if feasible. Commissioner B.J. Bowling subsequently proposed giving the town 30 days to decide whether to assume responsibility for renovations, estimated at $582,000.

Although the house is not listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was previously considered eligible by the Maryland Historical Trust. With the town’s response received, the Board of Commissioners has voted to approve recommendations for its demolition and the establishment of a pocket playground.
