SOUTHERN MARYLAND — Southern Maryland residents are being advised to prepare for potential heavy rain as Tropical Storm Chantal moves up the East Coast. According to the Southern Maryland Weather Center, the storm briefly exhibited eyewall-like features in satellite imagery during an unexpected intensification just before landfall.
Chantal, which made landfall over the Southeast this weekend, is now forecasted to maintain its structure as a tropical depression slightly longer than initially projected. Meteorologists say the system is expected to reach Maryland and parts of Virginia by Monday afternoon.
While the winds associated with Chantal are expected to remain light, forecasters are cautioning that Southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore could see localized rainfall totals between two and four inches, particularly in areas affected by stronger downpours.
Forecast models shared by the Southern Maryland Weather Center show the storm tracking up through the Mid-Atlantic with the heaviest precipitation likely occurring in the southern counties. Residents are encouraged to monitor further updates and prepare for potential street flooding or brief travel disruptions.
The Weather Center also noted they have posted a video analyzing the storm’s recent development, including the eyewall-like feature observed in satellite imagery. Additional updates will be provided as the system approaches the region.
