All The Movies & TV Shows Arriving In August 2024

Summary

  • Apple TV+ in August 2024 brings original content like Cowboy Cartel and Bad Monkey, staying unique among streaming options.
  • Apple TV+ removed licensed movies in June and focuses on producing original content, adding shows like Yo Gabba Gabbaland.
  • August releases include The Instigators, a heist comedy film starring Matt Damon, and new episodes of Time Bandits.

Apple TV+ is known for its award-winning original movies and shows, and some great new movies and TV shows will arrive on the platform in August 2024. Apple TV+ positioned itself as an alternative to services like Netflix by offering exclusive original content not found elsewhere. Unlike other streaming services, the Apple TV+ catalog remains mostly constant, typically only adding original content and rarely adding licensed material, keeping it unique among streaming options. August sees the service adding more originals with titles like the thriller Cowboy Cartel and action-comedy caper Bad Monkey.

In June, Apple TV+ removed all of the popular licensed movies it previously added as a limited engagement. These additions were unusual because AppleTV+ has very few licensed movies and TV shows, and in July and August, Apple TV+ remains constant in only producing original content. The biggest July 2024 releases are still available, including the Apple TV+ original seriesTime Bandits, which is also adding more new episodes weekly through August 21.

The Best Movies And TV Shows Arriving On Apple TV+ In August 2024

Three New Shows, One Movie & Two Documentaries

Cowboy Cartel

Cowboy Cartel is a documentary following a rookie FBI agent as he sets out to uncover a massive money laundering operation. The operation is part of the American horse racing scene, and the bad guys are one of Mexico’s most deadly cartels. The documentary plays out as a four-part series and tells the story of how this rookie agent, Scott Lawson, was able to bust open the entire multimillion-dollar money laundering operation run by Los Zetas.

The money laundering case this documentary focuses on was cracked in 2012

Lawson set out on a hunch and ended up taking down the Treviño brothers, the leaders of Los Zetas, after he infiltrated the cartel and discovered the money laundering operations inside the American Quarter Horse racing industry. The documentary takes viewers inside the operation and includes interviews with Lawson himself as well as IRS agent Steve Pennington, Irving police officers Steve Junker, Brian Schutt and Kim Williams, and many more people involved.

The Instigators

Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) reteams with Matt Damon for a heist comedy movie that will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 9, following a short theatrical release (on August 2). The movie follows Rory (Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck), two men who attempt a robbery, but everything goes wrong. Rory is trying to make good for his son, but has a mortgage and unpaid child support, while Cobby is an ex-con. They try to steal a corrupt politician’s money, but it all goes south.

The police are on their trail, and they have both vengeful politicians and angry crime bosses on their tails as well. The two end up convincing Rory’s therapist, Dr. Donna Rivera (Hong Chau) to help them with their getaway, all while pretending to be a hostage to protect her. However, when they start to bicker among themselves, they realize they have to find a way to get along if they want to escape capture and get out of this alive.

Yo Gabba Gabbaland! Season 1

Fans of a certain age are sure to remember Yo Gabba Gabba!, the children’s musical television series that had five costumed toys come to life and have fun with their friend DJ Lance Rock (Lance Robertson). The original series was on Nickelodeon and aired for four seasons and 66 episodes. The series is making a comeback now to Apple TV+ with Yo Gabba Gabbaland! This time, Kammy Kam (Kamryn Smith) is the host of the show and it looks like it will be much like the original series.

The original Yo Gabba Gabba is not on Apple TV+ but can be streamed on Roku.

There will be lots of music and dancing, along with life lessons as the entire purpose is to teach younger kids while providing wholesome moments. All five of the toys are coming back for this series (Muno, Foofa, Brobee, Toodee, and Plex), so parents might want to relive some of their childhood moments with their own kids for this new family series. There will also be several musical guests who join the fun throughout the season, as well as actors, scientists, and more.

Bad Monkey Season 1

Based on Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 best-selling novel, Bad Monkey is a drama series coming to Apple TV+ that stars Vince Vaughn as Andrew Yancy, a former detective who now works as a restaurant inspector. He used to be a successful detective in Miami, but he was pushed out and now works as a health inspector in the Florida Keys. Things change when he finds a human arm while he is fishing. Yancy then thinks that if he finds out who it belongs to and solves the mystery, he might get his job back.

However, soon, he finds himself in over his head and in a lot of danger, and he has to find a way to solve this mystery before he ends up dead. He works with the odd people in the Florida Keys and, as the title suggests, an actual bad monkey. The cast is great for this series, with Michelle Monaghan, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rob Delaney, and more. The first two episodes drop on Apple TV+ on August 14 and there are 10 episodes in the first season, which ends on October 9.

Pachinko Season 2

Season 2 of Pachinko continues the story based on the 2017 best-selling novel by Min Jin Lee. It follows the lives of one Korean family over four generations from 1915 to 1989 and plays out across multiple time periods. The first season dropped onto Apple TV+ in 2022 and sees Sunja (Kim Min-ha/ Youn Yuh-jung) leaving her family in Japanese-ruled Korea to move to the Koreatown of Osaka, Japan. She faces discrimination and rough living conditions but perseveres.

The second season picks up on Sunja’s life and journey, including her life during World War II, and arrives on August 23. It also shows much more in the later years, as it follows her grandson, Solomon Baek (Jin Ha), who works as a businessman in Japan. The first season was a huge success and earned several awards, including one Primetime Emmy nomination and a win at the American Film Institute Awards as one of the Top 10 Programs of the Year.

K-Pop Idols

At the end of August, a new documentary is coming that promises to take fans inside the world of K-pop stardom. The six-episode documentary series hits the streaming service on August 30 and will showcase the biggest musical artists with behind-the-scenes looks at the bands’ preparation, lives, and competitive nature. It includes a look at some of the biggest names in K-pop, including Jessi, CRAVITY, and BLACKSWAN.

The six episodes will follow these three bands as they work hard to build their brand, perfect their music and performances, and fight to make it to the top of the ultra-competitive K-pop industry. The series is produced by the team that created Billy Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry and Bling Empire. Jessi was born in New York, raised in New Jersey, and moved to South Korea when she was 15. CRAVITY is composed of nine members. BLACKSWAN features Fatou, Gabi, Sriya and NVee.
