BALTIMORE – The National Weather Service has issued a warning for light freezing rain expected to affect parts of the region Tuesday, December 24, 2024. Travelers are urged to exercise caution as icy conditions are likely on untreated and elevated surfaces.

The freezing rain is forecasted to begin between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. in the Alleghenies, gradually spreading eastward toward the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., metropolitan areas between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Commuters in these areas should anticipate a light glaze of ice on roads, bridges, and sidewalks, potentially causing hazardous travel conditions during the morning rush.

According to the National Weather Service, the freezing rain will transition into lighter freezing drizzle by late Tuesday morning and could persist intermittently through the evening, ending between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. in most areas. Despite the relatively light precipitation, the risk of icy surfaces remains significant throughout the day.

Officials recommend delaying travel where possible and using extreme caution if venturing out. “Even a thin layer of ice can make roads and sidewalks treacherous,” the advisory stated.

This weather system is expected to exit the region by midday Wednesday, just in time for holiday travelers making last-minute trips. However, those planning to travel Tuesday are encouraged to monitor updates and consider alternative schedules.
