Orioles select Ike Irish with 19th overall pick

The 2025 MLB Draft kicked off tonight, and the Baltimore Orioles look to be very busy as they own multiple picks in the first round. The team started off with an interesting one, taking Auburn’s Ike Irish with the 19th pick.

The O’s went with a familiar position with this one, as Irish caught for the Auburn Tigers in his collegiate career. Irish had a phenomenal season with the Tigers in ’25, batting .364 with 19 HR’s and 58 RBI’s in 55 games. Irish capped off his amazing season by being nominated as a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the best player in college baseball.

Irish joins a pretty crowded catching room that includes former All-Star Adley Rutschman and top-20 prospect Samuel Basallo. Catchers that hit for average and power are few and far between in today’s game, and Irish will look to break through with the club and see significant playing time in the years to come.
