O’s make roster moves as more injuries pile on
The 2024 campaign has been riddled with injuries for the Baltimore Orioles. They’ve been without their All-Star closer Felix Bautista the entire season. Baltimore also lost Kyle Bradish, John Means and Tyler Wells to elbow injuries back in June. The injury bug hit the O’s again as Jorge Mateo suffered a fractured elbow on Tuesday against Miami.
The Orioles called up infielder Connor Norby today to take Mateo’s spot on the infield. Norby went 3-for-14 in four games for the Orioles back in early June with a home run and two RBIs. Expect Norby and Jordan Westburg to split time at second base until Mateo is clear to come back. Baltimore placed Mateo on the 10-day IL, so it might not be long before we see him again.
The team also made two pitching moves after last night’s game. Chayce McDermott will return to Norfolk after making his first career appearance last night. McDermott started the game and pitched four innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks. Reliever Bryan Baker will take McDermott’s place on the roster. Baker has a 4.32 ERA in 16.2 innings with 13 strikeouts.
The Orioles that Norby and Baker can provide a spark to a team that is in danger of being swept by the Marlins. Miami is in last place in the NL East, so they’re looking to play spoiler to the first place Orioles. If the Orioles were to be swept, it would be the fourth of the season, by far the most in the last three years combined.
