The Vampire Diaries Movie Chances Get Intriguing Update From Co-Creator 7 Years After Series Finale

The Vampire Diaries movie gets an intriguing update from Julie Plec, the co-creator of the supernatural teen drama. Based on L. J. Smith’s novel of the same name, the supernatural series premiered on The CW in 2009. It became one of the most successful long-running series on TV, producing offshoots like comic books and novels and several spinoff shows which have also found moderate success. The Vampire Diaries concluded in 2017, but the co-creator has since teased a potential movie for some time.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Plec spoke about a Vampire Diaries movie that could bring back the original cast and revisit parts of the original story. She explained that producing a movie right now will pose a tough challenge, seeing as many characters died in the show. However, she believes it will be a fun challenge regardless. Read her full quote below:

You know what, Paul Wesley and I were literally just texting two days ago because he saw the news about the Twilight animated show and he’s like, “Why aren’t we doing this?” And I said, “Good question. We should do this.” There’s so many opportunities to keep this world alive and keep this franchise going. For me, it’s just about the right idea and the right time, like I’m game. Leslie Morgenstein started talking about a Vampire Diaries movie in like season two, so I’m sure that it’s something that he still continues to pursue quietly. We’ve talked about all kinds of different ways to revisit parts of the story that we love or to tell a new version of the story. I know that those conversations are always happening. I personally know that there is a story that I would like to tell if anyone will have me eventually, so we shall see.

The tricky part of a vampire story is that your character is not supposed to age, right? So it makes it more complicated, and also 90 percent of them died before the show ended, so it makes the idea of a sequel or a prequel very complicated. But there are still ways that you can pay homage to the central characters and revisit those characters and some of the ideas I have in my head are ways to do that. However, whoever takes on the next chapter of The Vampire Diaries’ story, if it’s me or somebody else, they will have their work cut out for him because all those hundreds of episodes across all three shows, like a lot of stories have been told, so it’s not without its challenges but it’s a fun challenge.

Is A Vampire Diaries Movie A Good Idea?

It May Be Too Late With The Original Cast.

A few years after the premiere of the original The Vampire Diaries, the series developed into a broader franchise, starting with The Originals, which capitalized on the primary show’s success with new characters and expanded the supernatural lore. The Originals became quite successful in that it produced another spinoff, Legacies, which was unfortunately canceled in 2022 when The CW axed several series aimed at teens and young adults.

Since the cancelation of Legacies, The Vampire Diaries universe has largely remained inactive, and seeing that the franchise still commands a huge following, a prequel movie to the original series might be a good idea to revisit the world and characters. However, there are indeed challenges to returning to the world, such as the story. In addition, the cast members are much older now, while their vampire counterparts are not expected to age in the series.

One potential storyline that could work for the proposed The Vampire Diaries movie is focusing on Bonnie and the Bennett witches. Bonnie was one of the most beloved characters, and some might argue that she deserves some redemption for the way she was mistreated in the original series. A movie about her and the Bennett storyline could be intriguing enough to bring a vast majority of its viewers back to the supernatural world. While there remains to be any continuation in the universe at this point, the co-creator is still investing her time in the vampire genre with a new show.
