MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — Emergency crews responded to a serious crash involving an overturned vehicle and reported entrapment on Three Notch Road at Mount Zion Church Road in Mechanicsville on Sunday, March 23, around 11:00 a.m.
Multiple emergency callers described a chaotic scene where a truck had flipped onto its side, trapping at least one person. A silver Mercury was also involved, coming to rest in the middle of the roadway. Initial reports indicated bystanders attempted to assist occupants out of the vehicles.
First responders from Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department arrived quickly, where command was established and the severity of the crash was confirmed. Emergency personnel immediately began extrication efforts on a patient trapped inside a heavily damaged blue truck.
Due to the severity of injuries, a helicopter was requested to transport the critically injured occupant. Aviation from Maryland State Police responded to conduct an emergency flyout from a nearby landing zone set up at Laurel Grove Park. Extrication was successfully completed within approximately 10 minutes, and the patient was swiftly transported by ambulance to the helicopter awaiting nearby.
A second patient involved in the crash initially required medical attention but ultimately declined further treatment at the scene, signing a refusal of care.
Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) crews were also dispatched to the accident site due to an uprooted guide wire caused by the collision, presenting additional hazards to first responders and passing motorists.
The roadway was temporarily shut down in the immediate area as authorities conducted an investigation and cleared the scene. Drivers are urged to use caution if traveling in the vicinity.
